Rocky outcroppings punctuate fields of tall grass in a planet dominated by misty highland terrain.
~ Official Description

Volterra is one of the five planets that reside within the Korpus Sector.

Topography[]

Volterra’s geography is similar to Bellatrix, Achernar Secundus and Afoyay Bay. It's surface features vast rocky highlands, dense valleys, and scattered lakes. The planet’s temperate climate has allowed for large-scale agriculture and industrial expansion in the form of three major cities, Scarlet Haven, Edward's Grave and the mega-city of Light-of-Liberty. This makes the planet a major population and crucial economic hub for the sector, on top of being a vital FLT juncture.

History[]

Second Galactic War[]

Volterra was, for much of its history following its colonization after the First Galactic War, a peaceful and prosperous planet colony of Super Earth without many events that are worth noting aside from the founding of it's three major settlements. Scarlet Haven, Edward's Grave and the planetary capital of Light-of-Liberty -- which would eventually develop into a full fledged mega-city.

Unfortunately this period of peaceful development would come to an end in 2184, during the months of June through to October, as it's populous watched in horror as the Terminids pounced on its neighboring planets, first Turing and then Achird III. Amidst the Terminid crisis, the Colonial Overseer would wisely shut down all FTL Lines leading out of the planet, which would help keep Volterra safe from the fascist scourge. Though a short term hit to logistics and the sectors economy, this decision would keep the planet safe even whilst the rest of the Korpus Sector fell into chaos.

Return of the Illuminate[]

However, even such precautions couldn't protect Volterra from what would occur next. On December 28th, the Illuminate; an ancient enemy of Super Earth that was thought extinct, had returned to wage war on Managed Democracy once more. Following their vicious raid at Julheim, the Illuminate then sent a raid onto Volterra, hoping to abduct its citizens and plunder its resources.

As such, the Helldivers; filled with righteous anger at the atrocities at Julheim, would deploy onto Volterra in full force, decided to avenge the lives lost. They battled against the Illuminate for 10 hours without faltering, managing to repel the invading force successfully and safeguarding Volterra's citizens and resources.

Operation Pest Control[]

When Super Earth itself was threatened in May of 2185 by the Illuminate and the Great Host, the S.E.A.F. regiments garrisoned in the Korpus Sector would be recalled to defend humanity's homeworld. Whilst the defense of the Federation's capital world was a resounding success, this would unfortunately leave Volterra and it's neighbors vulnerable to a sudden outbreak of Terminids.

Volterra would be attacked on the 11th of June, with the skeletal colonial forces on hand attempting to put up a resistance in the planet's mega-cities long enough for outside reinforcements to arrive. Fortunately they would not have to wait long as the Helldivers, fresh off of successful defense campaigns on Crucible and Alta V would arrive in force, turning the siege of Scarlet's Haven into a killing field for the Terminid hordes.

Trivia[]

  • Volterra is a walled town southwest of Florence, in Italy. Its history dates from before the 8th century BC and it has substantial structures from the Etruscan, Roman, and Medieval periods.
  • Who Edward is and what he did to he have a city named after him is a matter of speculation. He could be a general from the first galactic war or the founder of the colony, but unfortunately there us no way for us to know for sure. The colonies likely have all sorts of local politics and history that we as helldivers are not privy.
    • Alternatively, it could be a reference to The Twilight Saga. In Twilight: New Moon, Volterra is the fictional home of the Volturi, a powerful vampire coven. In the book's narrative, Bella Swan visit's Volterra to try and convince Edward Cullen to live and later attempts to save Edward from the Volturi.
