Spore Spewers are a Secondary Objective and tactical asset in Helldivers 2 which have a chance to appear in Medium or higher Difficulty Missions on Terminid-held planets. Resembling large mushrooms, they present an environmental hazard to the Helldivers by constantly releasing thick clouds of spores into the air, greatly obscuring vision in a large area around it.
Identifying[]
The presence of Spore Spewers on the map is relatively easy to spot depending on the planet terrain. On planets with little to no high terrain or hills, they can be seen from almost any distance on the map due to them emitting a very notable glow that can be seen through the dense clouds. Regardless of terrain, a thick green fog lingering around the Helldivers is a surefire way to identify that a Spore Spewer is nearby.
Strategy[]
On their own, Spore Spewers pose no more than a minor inconvenience to Helldivers, as their spores only obscure vision without dealing any kind of damage (akin to the Orbital Smoke Strike Stratagem). Their threat level rises, however, when they are paired with large bug Patrols or positioned near critical objectives or bug Breaches. The reduced vision can, in those situations, often prove fatal to Helldivers, as it makes it far more difficult to spot priority enemies such as Chargers and camouflaged Stalkers before they have already closed distance. If a firefight breaks out near Spore Spewers, destroying them should be a priority.
Spewers themselves are easy to single out, provided one's minimap isn't obscured by atmospheric spores. They will always be found in very small bases with an oblong or circular profile on the minimap. If this is not available, they have a bright, bio-luminescent orange glow that can be seen from a distance.
Changes to their genetics has caused them to mutate and become far more dense compared to their original incarnation. It is no longer feasible to take them out with just thrown grenades. It now requires anti-structure weaponry or stratagems to take them down, such as the Orbital Precision Strike, Recoilless Rifle, Eagle Airstrike, or FAF-14 Spear. If using stratagems against them, be sure to place them under the spewer's umbrella for best results, as a glancing explosion may fail to destroy them in one attack.
If all else fails, the Spewer is also vulnerable to being destroyed with conventional small arms through concentrated fire due to its lack of armor. This is best done using a machine gun, as the spewer's high HP means it will take several dozen.
