Centuries old, Overseers are formidable, calculating warriors armed with arcane weaponry. They bend the Voteless to their will, using them as expendable shields in a craven attempt to conserve their own numbers.
~ Helldivers 2 PlayStation Store Page

The Overseers are the primary foot soldiers of the Illuminate. Armed with a staff for both close quarters and ranged combat, these warriors are often seen leading the lesser Voteless horde as cannon fodder.

The Overseer also comes with two variants:

  • Elevated Overseer: An Overseer equipped with a hover pack and plasma rifle, augmenting them with increased mobility and firepower.
  • Crescent Overseer: An Overseer equipped with an energy cannon, specializing in ranged attacks.

Physiology[]

HD2 Illuminate Return

A group of Overseers.

The Overseers are bipedal aliens, almost always being taller than the average human (as the Helldivers are several inches shorter than the Overseers). In terms of general anatomy, they're mostly anthropomorphic, with their limbs, joints and general physiology being similar in some degree to humans.

It appears that Overseers, if not the Squ'ith species at large, possess digitigrade lower limbs; much unlike humans, who possess plantigrade legs. Each of the Overseer's limbs possesses 3 appendages, all of equal length for a total of 12 "fingers", 6 on their lower limbs and 6 on their superior limbs. While they can stretch the joints in their superior limbs and are capable of full motion in them, they are unable to stretch their knees when running, but will sometimes fully stretch their legs when idle and out of combat.

The Overseers are clad in a white armor made out of an unknown alien material that is highly durable, requiring ammunition capable of medium armor penetration to effectively deal damage to them. Additionally, Overseers are equipped with a small, blue Energy Shield that can only be effectively punctured by ammunition capable of Heavy Armor Penetration, although enough damage will eventually disable it. Despite this, parts of their dark blue skin can be seen when their armor is damaged, indicating that they're part of the "warrior" caste of the Illuminate.

They can turn their heads independently, as seen in the "Omens of Tyranny" trailer, indicating that they possess necks and, possibly, spinal cords similar to that of humans.

Tactics[]

  • Overseers only have light body armor, but their helmets are medium-armored.
    • An overseer's body armor can be shattered with repeated, concentrated hits. Once shattered, their body will take full damage from all weapons.
    • Fire and medium-penetration weapons work best against overseers, as this bypasses their natural durability.
    • Concussive weapons, arc weapons and the SG-20 Halt are effective at stunning overseers, which is useful when they need to be fended off while they are rushing. Anything that can cause stun or stagger, will stop them mid-charge.
    • A single headshot from the P-4 Senator at close range is sufficient enough to kill an Overseer. This also applies to the Elevated Overseer.
    • If their left arm is removed, they will still be able to use their staff. If the right arm is removed, they will die instantly.
  • Overseers are normally found either guarding Illuminate encampments or leading groups of Voteless.
  • Overseers will typically fire at Helldivers first with their energy staves, before moving in for close combat. There is a visible charge-up period for their ranged weapons, which gives a window of opportunity to kill them before they fire.
    • When a Helldiver is knocked down from the blast of their staff, they will almost always rush into to close combat. A sprinting overseer means they are about to engage in melee combat.
    • A single swing from their staff is very powerful, and is enough to either kill or severely weaken lightly-armored Helldivers in one attack. If one survives, one will very likely sustain limb damage, even with the Vitality Enhancement booster.
  • When under fire, overseers will deploy their energy shields, which protect from the head to their groin. While not particularly strong as it will eventually be depleted with enough hits, this adds a level of protection from their already-tanky selves.
    • The shield does not cover their calves, their sides, and back.
    • The shield only protects against solid projectiles. Explosions, fire, and gas will bypass it.
    • If shot at the legs while deploying their shields at close range, they will typically abandon their defensive posture and resort to closing into melee.
  • Overseers are capable of deflecting thrown grenades with their staves, although only if they're alerted and aware of the Helldiver about to throw one. Impact grenades are not affected, but cooked timed grenades may become hazardous to the thrower if it lands back at them.

Trivia[]

  • The Overseers' general appearance seems to be heavily influenced by the Sangheili from the Halo series, which are the Elite enemy types under the Covenant. Their physiology is similar to them, with the only exception being their faces (which, for the Illuminate, are covered up versus the Sangheili's quadruple jaws). The Overseers' fighting style and tactics are overall similar, as the Elites in the Halo games can also project energy shields and fight in a similar fashion to the Overseers, with the only difference being that the Elites all have shields around them that can regenerate, while the Overseers only have their armour & handheld shield.
  • The arcane energy staff of the Overseer, meanwhile, could be based on the Ma'Tok staff from the Stargate series, with both essentially being hand held plasma cannons.
  • They appear to be an evolution of the Apprentice from the First Galactic War, both of whom use staves in combat. However, instead of launching stun orbs to close in for the kill, they now launch powerful plasma bolts.
  • Overseers will attempt to goad enemies with a chest thump. Curiously, Automaton Commissars also exhibit the same behavior, crossing their swords on their chest when engaging a Helldiver.
