"A laser weapon firing a continuous beam. Doesn't require ammunition, but will need heat sink replaced if it overheats."
The LAS-98 Laser Cannon is one of the stratagems available to the player. It is a shoulder-fired beam cannon, firing a concentrated beam of white-hot energy, capable of melting through all forms of armor.
Much like all beam-type weapons, the LAS-98 has near-infinite ammo. As long as it is allowed to cool off between engagements, the shooter can fire it indefinitely. If it is allowed to overheat however, the heat sink is destroyed and has to be replaced, which constitutes the weapon's "ammunition".
Stratagem Code[ | ]
Players must enter the following sequence, using the default Ctrl+WASD keys or the controller D-Pad in order to call down this single-use Stratagem during a mission:
Stats[ | ]
- Call-in Time: 3 seconds
- Uses: Unlimited
- Cooldown Time: 480 seconds (8 minutes)
Gameplay Tips[ | ]
- Pay careful attention to the heat meter when firing. Failing that, pay attention to the sound and the weapon's appearance. The beam will emit a high-pitched sound that gets higher and higher as it's fired continuously.
- The weapon also will sound off an audible alert and a electrical malfunction sound will come from it when it is just about to overheat. If the gun is allowed to rest by this point, it will cooldown. If not, the heat sink is destroyed and must be switched out.
- Both ammo and supply boxes restore 1 heat sink.
- The weapon is capable of penetrating heavy armor as of Patch 01.001.100, in the same vein as the AC-8 Autocannon and APW-1 Anti-Materiel Rifle.
- Due to its high durability damage, it excels at destroying enemy weakpoints.
- Since it has no recoil and has long range, it is adept at decapitating Devastators and shooting down gunships.
- While not the best weapon against Terminids as they generally lack abundance of medium and heavy armored units in comparison to Automatons, the LAS-98 still has use against them by lasing down swarms from long range, as its almost-unlimited ammunition can prove handy when thinning down their numbers, compared to using machine guns.
- As much as possible, do not let the weapon overheat. Replacing heat sinks should generally be reserved for high-threat situations where the gun needs to be fired continuously, or there's an ammo resupply nearby.
Strategy[ | ]
- The weapon is easily capable of killing and maiming Hulks by targeting their visor or limbs.
- The weapon does damage to Automaton Gunship engines.
- The weapon is capable of destroying the chin-mounted miniguns, underbelly, and the eye of Factory Striders.
- The weapon is capable of destroying Scout Strider legs.
- The weapon can penetrate tank armor, destroy their tracks and radiators. The same applies for turrets, sans tracks.
Notes[ | ]
- It does bonus damage to enemy weak points
- It is effectively a larger and more powerful version of the Las-5 Scythe
